Trey Combs is a celebrated author and angler who began his writing journey in the late 1960s. His work has left an indelible mark on all aspects of fly fishing. His extensive writing covers steelhead, salmon, and bluewater fly fishing. Throughout his body of work, he offers both practical guidance and rich storytelling, embodying his passion for the sport and deep respect for the environment.

He is best known for two seminal books, both considered “bibles” of the sport: Steelhead Fly Fishing and Flies (1976) and Steelhead Fly Fishing (1991). Recently he completed a comprehensive history of fly patterns and their dressing details, an 8-year project entitled Flies for Atlantic Salmon & Steelhead (2023). This limited-edition work features over 1000 photographs and illustrations of remarkable fly-tying creations from Scandinavia, Scotland, Russia’s Kola, Eastern Canada, and the steelhead rivers of the Pacific Northwest.

This website, maintained by his son, serves as a central location for all of Trey’s articles and books, including a blog with new content along with legacy articles dating back to 1969. It also includes a Fly Directory and the Trey Combs Fly Fishing Archive, where high-resolution plates and supporting notes will continue to grow over time.
